This landscape renovation in Garden City, NY was achieved in phases.

Upon completion of an home extension the H&Z landscape designers were called in to redesign the side yard. The second phase began after the entire house was repainted. At this point the all the foundation plantings were removed and a new landscape was installed. Our designers were asked to create a landscape that contained formal elements like sheared ilex shrubs and combine it with natural perennial plants.

The end result was beautiful combination of evergreen hollies, ilex shrubs, boxwoods. little lime hydrangeas, and perennial flowers. Pockets of space were intentionally left open for the installation of annual flowers.  A pastel palette of begonias and petunias were chosen for the Spring and Summer months and were later replaced with mums, kale and cabbage in the Fall.

At this 50 acre commercial site located in Bellerose Manor, NY H&Z designers were tasked with creating a welcoming, warm, environment outside their new management office.

The building was previously used as a storage facility where function took priority over form. Our designers wanted to turn that around and create a space with lush colors, textures and plant variety. We wanted the staff and all its visitors to feel as if they were walking within a garden not a converted parking lot. As the garden matures evergreen arborvitae shrubs will hide the adjacent garages and ornamental plum trees will provide a home to birds while also screening nearby buildings.

We set out to design a landscape that attracted potential residents and where existing owners would look forward to visiting. To help achieve this seasonal color changes are made 3 times per year. Spring/Summer annual flowers are planted with the emphasis on vibrant colors. As Summer fades the flowers are replaced with traditional yellow, gold, oranges, and burgundy colors of fall. Once the Holiday season approaches the office is decorated with white birch branches, balsalm ground cover and ornaments.

The result is an inviting environment with four seasons of color!

This Garden City project was long overdue. The house was being covered by overgrown, poorly maintained shrubs . The client enjoyed a variety of plants but she requested the new plants be low maintenance with a much ìneaterî appearance.

We did not want to lose the scale of the garden but we also wanted to honor the customers wishes for smaller plants. Our solution was to expand the beds and connect the previously separated planting areas. The new beds provided for a dramatic planting and also eliminated turf area that was unable to grow under the large tree.

The final design was a much cleaner, nicely maintained garden. The property was very shady so we planted shade tolerant shrubs such as holly, cherry laurels and boxwoods throughout. Variegated boxwood and variegated Holly provide year round color. Azaleas welcome the Spring with pink flowers while Hydrangeas and annual flowers provide for summer color.

Hines & Zaffarese Landscape Design At Guggenheim’s Falaise In Sands Point, New York.

Hines & Zaffarese was hired to revitalize the gardens surrounding the pool at “Falaise” the historical summer home built for Harry F. Guggenheim and his wife Caroline Morton in 1923. The architecture is French Eclectic and based on a 13th Century Norman manor house.

Historical photos portrayed a garden lush with annual flowers and tropical foliage. With that in mind, we designed an annual garden that accentuated the existing plants and hardscape.

Located in Sands Point, New York, Guggenheim’s Falaise is noted for being one of the few intact historic houses remaining on Long Island’s North Shore, which represents the opulent Gold Coast period of the 1920s. Lavish features of the house include an enclosed cobblestone courtyard, thickly mortared brick walls, steeply pitched roofs of heavy tile and a round tower.

We were called in to rescue this courtyard design. Unfortunately, the customer had an poor experience with their previous mason. After we finished up some loose ends with the patio installation, we set to work designing a backyard that fit into their wish for a courtyard style garden. For this client, we wanted to provide a more traditional, elegant design. We achieved this by planting a first level of boxwoods, which were surrounded by hydrangeas and knockout roses. This timeless design along with the addition of an Urn placed on a pedestal really adds to the upscale feel of the garden. Oak Leaf Hollies were planted to give a sense of privacy without completely blocking out their friendly neighbors. The final result was a truly relaxing, elegant backyard retreat.

The idea for this landscape design and installation project in Franklin Square, NY was to create a courtyard like setting.

This small space design began when our long-time maintenance customer wanted some ideas on how to get better use of her backyard. She requested a lot of flowering shrubs, privacy from her nearby neighbors and enough space for their dog.

Our design team chose plants that would perform well in the wide range of light settings. We planted skip laurels beneath the neighbors large tree due to their ability to perform well in the shade and hide their older fence. On the east side of the property, we chose arborvitae ëelegantissimaí for their dense foliage and preference for sun. As they mature, they will provide a living wall, hiding the neighboring driveway.

On the east side, we did not have the luxury of waiting years for the plants to mature. It was a narrow space but we wanted to gain as much vertical coverage as possible. The hornbeam trees were a perfect match for the space.

The gentle curves of the planting beds were a perfect accent to the new paving stone patio and stairs that we installed. Color, blooming flowers, and trickling water became an inviting space for birds and honey bees throughout the year.

After the successful landscape design of the backyard, the client asked us to begin work on the front yard immediately!

This home received a full suite of Hines & Zaffarese services including landscape design, masonry and a new sod lawn. Hines & Zaffarese met with the owners and discussed their needs and desires for a completely new “front-end” to their home. After a careful Needs Analysis, Hines & Zaffarese devised a distinct plan to accomplish exactly what they wanted in a concise time frame.

Home Properties understands how a beautiful landscape contributes to a happy, healthy home. Together we developed a property management program including, seasonal cleanups, weekly maintenance, tree/shrub pruning and lawn care applications.

To further enhance the properties appearance, we also installed mulch and annual flowers every year. A separate budget was created for planting permanent landscapes throughout the community.

Hines & Zaffarese transformed this dorm entry into a lush, LEED compliant natural environment.

Hines & Zaffarese has an ongoing relationship with various entities within Queens College. For every project, the goal is to enhance the college experience by creating a beautiful setting.

Landscapes were installed near the cafeteria, Student Union, and athletic fields. The newly constructed dorm rooms at the Summit building had to meet very stringent LEED construction standards (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Over 100 yards of compacted soil and construction fill were removed and replaced with rich topsoil and compost. The landscape that was designed by Hines & Zaffarese utilized native species plants and was certified LEED compliant.

LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. To receive LEED certification, building projects satisfy prerequisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification. LEED certification means healthier, more productive places, reduced stress on the environment by encouraging energy and resource-efficient buildings, and savings from increased building value, higher lease rates and decreased utility costs.

This project was a front foundation redesign in Garden City Park, NY. Our customer was very pleased with the results of previous landscape design projects we achieved in the past, so in preparation of their Daughter’s engagement party, they decided the front foundation needed an overhaul.

The customer complained of sitting water in the area and they also wanted some natural features in the garden. After sampling different material we agreed on creating a blue stone retaining wall because of how nicely it tied in with their existing paving stone walkway, as well as its stand alone beauty. The wall was built using tumbled blue stone and stacked by hand. Importing some compost and elevating the area also solved their drainage issue. The nearby moss rock boulders also helped in enhancing the natural aesthetics of the space.

All the existing shrubs were removed and we started with a blank slate. The repetition of Ilex Heleri along the walkway creates an inviting entry to the front door. Vertical elements in the form of boxwoods and hinoki cypress add interest through creating a sense of depth.

With addition of annual flowers, the the entire landscape was transformed in plenty of time for the party, and the delight of all their guests.
